Nine justices sit in the chairs of The Supreme Court and some may view them as having more power than the U.S president. They may have more judicial power but the president definitely has more executive power. The Supreme Court has 200-plus years of history, and some consider it to be the most powerful court in the world! It wasn't always like this though, because The Supreme Court has surely been a victim of controversy.
Dred Scott v. Sanford was one of the most important cases in The Supreme Court's history because of the controversy it brought with it. The case was long-standing and finally got brought up to The Supreme Court. Dred Scott was a slave at the time and he sued for wrongful enslavement. He lived in a free state and should have won the case but The Supreme Court voted 7-2 in the opposite favor of him. This created uproar in the U.S justice system and was eventually a stepping stone to the Civil War and The Supreme Court's loss of credibility.
Although The Supreme Court has had its rough patches, it is still around today for very good reasons. Nowadays so many people look to The Supreme Court for justice and it delivers. Just about 7000 cases come in a year and as few as 150 cases get approved. Each justice reviews each case, whether it's the original case or notes on the case that was previously looked over by another justice. The Supreme Court would be pointless if hundreds of cases weren't submitted weekly because they only decided on the issues given to them.
The reason I like The Supreme Court is the true honesty and respect they give to each and every case. Whether it was written by a billionaire entrepreneur or a prisoner each one is taken seriously and given the same amount of thought. The nine justices meet each week to discuss the cases they received that week and one of the justices in the video mentioned that everybody must speak once before someone speaks twice. This is another reason why I believe that The Supreme Court produces real justice.
